Introduction & Location

Rattota Divisional Secretary’s Division is situated between Northern latitude 7.25-7.33 & Eastern longitude 80.36- 80.45 and 1000-5000 feet height from the Sea level. The Division mostly consists of mountains, hills & inaccessible places and the Southern and Eastern boundaries are covered by  range of Hunnasgiri mountain and Knukles Conservation zone which has been  introduced as world heritage. According to the views  of Geologists regarding with Geological evaluation of Sri Lanka , range of mountains   in Matale District are  results of  inclination, compressive force, anticlinal folds, fold synclinal of the earth's crust. Knukles mountains range can be introduced as an example for fold synclinal in this area. Soil erosion process has been increased due to severe declivity of Northern and Eastern areas of Rattota. Some slope areas where the solid layer exposed to earth surface   face to land sliding attack.

Heavy rain fall received for this area and   it is in 1000mm-2500mm  during the year. Temperature of this area is  24 - 30 Celsius  degrees and temperate and this climate is suitable for Economical crops such as Tea, Coffee and Pepper.

Three Environmental zones can be identified in this area

  1. Upcountry Intermediate Central Zone
  2. Mid country Wet zone
  3. Mid Country Inter median zone

There are number of water streams sustained with water can be seen in this division. Small water sources start from Knukles and Hunnasgiriya  such as Daliwala Oya. Dankanda Oya, Moragulu Oya, Nikaloya  flows through the division and connect with Suduganga.

Rattota Divisional Secretary’s Division consists of 3 Agricultural climatic zones. Those are Intermediate Central Zone, Midcountry Wet zone, Midcountry Inter Central Zone. Annual rain fall is 1000-2500ml Maximum rainfall of 2500ml receives in December,January.

Ever green forests and Patana can be identified in Knukles conservation   zone and exotic silviculture such as  Pinus, Eucaliptus, Turpentine plantation have been grown in 380 hectares by Forest Conservation Department in Madawatta, Dankanda, Polwattakanda, Weralugastanna, Nikoloya, Kabaragala, areas.

When we consider the distribution of soil in this division,   Red Brown Soil which mostly found in Matale District  can also be seen in Rattota division. According to climatic zones specialized soil types can be identified in this area

  1. Mid Country Wet Zone /Red Brown Latasolt Soil/Light Brown Latasolt Soil
  1. Upcountry Intermediate Central Zone/Red Brown Latasolt Soil/Upcountry  hard Soil
  1. Intermediate Central Zone/Red Brown Latasolt Soil/Light Brown loam

Climate & Temperature

            Rattota Divisional Secretary’s Division consists of 3 climatic zones. They are Upcountry Inter Central zone ( IM 3a) Mid country Wet zone. (WM3b) and Mid Country inter central zone. Annual rainfall is between 1000-2500ml  and maximum rainfall of 2500ml receives in December and January. The minimum rainfall receives in July and August. Rainfall mainly receives in North east monsoon period and less in South West monsoon.  Average temperature is 24-30 Celsius degree and the most hottest month is August and January has  very cool climate.

Historical Background & Divisional Administration

When Sri Lanka became as a Colony in 1815 , Rattota area has been included to Kanda Udarata regime. After that Rattota has been included to  Matala Assistant Government Agent’s  division as Matala became as a separated District in 1955. For the reason of increasing  administrative activities, Matale District has been separated to three revenue divisions after the freedom and Rattota  was its  Southern part. Number of divisions have been increased in to 10 and a separate division has been nominated for Rattota after 1963. Name of this division has been changed in tom Divisional Government Agent’s Division                                       

Grama Niladhari service has been introduced after changing  the post of Village headman method  in 1963 and this has been converted in to Divisional Secretariat which consists of 54 Grama Niladhari Divisions. This division became as an populous area within past two decays  because  Rattota division is situated near Matale town and it has fine climate suitable for residence.

Rattota Divisional Secretary’s Division entirely belongs to Rattota Pradesiya Saba area and manipulate  most of development activities besides to fulfill of public requaments from this institute. This Pradesiya Saba  has been introduced in 80th decay instead of old gamsabha method and at present  it consists of 12 members who have been selected by vote of people in the area.  Before introduce this Pradeshiya Saba method a town council has been existed  related to Rattota town in 70-80 decays.  

Rattota Divisional Secretary’s Division consists of 54 Grama Niladhari Divisions and total population is 60464. This division became as a populous area within past two decays because Rattota division is situated near Matale town and it has fine climate suitable for residence.

Maximum production  and yield  of Minor Export production such as  Cinnamon, Pepper, Coffee   of  Matale District  received from Rattota area.  Cultivation of Cardamom is successfully done in Eastern and Southern boundaries of this division. The main reason to spread Cultivation of Cardamom is receiving of maximum price for  yield of Cardamom during past two decays and people in this area receive high income due to the distribution of such high quality economic crops. 

Although  the commercial town of this division is Rattota people in this area fulfill their requirements from Matale town. Illukkumbura road by which connect difficult but beautiful laggala and wilgamuwa area runs through this division.    

Most of people in Rattota area are Sinhala Budhists and engage their jobs  in private  and government sector in Matale town area. Indian origin Tamil peoples  live in associated with estates.  Therefore Hindu Dewala and Kovil can be seen in this estates. A Telecommunication tower which almost covers Sri Lanka has been established in the top of Reverston Mountain. Natural Beauty of Eastern and Southern part of the division is buttress tourism industry.
